Instagram is ALWAYS adding & updating features, one of the latest being reels!
Reels are a great way to share valuable content creatively in less than 30 seconds (which is great for followers with short attention spans).
As a Virtual Assistant who spends A LOT
of time on social media, especially Instagram, I have seen many people discuss how the Instagram algorithm is favouring reels, so I wanted to put this to the test. Back in April I ran a "Reel Experiment" where I shared 5 consecutive days worth of reels to see the results it brings to my account.
My Reel Content...
Firstly, let me start with the content I shared. Just like my main feed content I structured my reels around my content pillars and shared about the following topics;
Day 1 - Canva Hack: Adding Drop Shadows To Your Images
Day 2- How a Virtual Assistant Can Help You Serve Your Dream Clients
Day 3 - Canva Hack: Creating Cohesive Template Styles
Day 4 - Meet The Virtual Assistant Team
Day 5 - Canva Hack: Tidy Up Elements
I was passionate about providing a range of reels to reach different audience consuming styles and to also test out how trending audio faired against original audio, stay tuned to find out the results.
My Predictions...
As an avid Reel & TikTok watcher, I had an idea in mind of the areas I would most likely see an increase on my account and I also outlined areas I wanted to receive results from too, these included;
• Overall page reach increase
• Increase of followers
• More interaction on my other forms of content
• At least one or two potential clients reaching out/enquiring

The Results...
So after a week of anticipation and getting a little addicted to watching my insights, it was finally time to see the results Reels brought to my account. I know this is the part of the blog post you have all been waiting for!
• Let's start with reach, this is what I anticipated to increase the most and to be precise I had a 210% increase
for my account which I was super happy with. This meant both my content and account was reaching a wider audience.
• Another area I saw an increase was to my followers, this only went up by 0.2%, which I believe were from other avenues.
• I really wanted my Reels to entice people to consume more of my content but during the week I saw no increase in content interactions.
• Finally, my enquiry leads. As I documented the process of running the "Reel Experiment" I had an increase in DM conversation about Reels themselves but I have no enquiry leads relating to my services.
• Out of the 5 Reels I shared just one post reached over 1,000 views (Day 2). In this reel I used trending audio which I believe helped reach these numbers as my original audio posts didn't perform as well.
Moving Forward...
Despite not getting the return I would like to have received for the time it took to create, write and share my Reels - overall I really enjoyed creating and sharing them to Instagram. It was a great to diversify the content style I share to my account and I will definitely continue to share Reels and make necessary changes from my findings.
I will not put pressure to create 5 reels a week (as this is A LOT), instead I am going to use reels as fillers for the days I'm not posting to my main feed. This will ensure I am showing up consistently for my followers which is KEY when running an online business.
The time I am saving in creating fewer Reels I will invest into online engagement as I know this brings me better results for increasing my followers, building connections and ultimately securing those sales for my business.
With love,
Cassie xx
